Arturo Genre

Arturo Genre (Marsiglia 1937 - Torino 1997) was Associate Professor of Experimental Phonetics at the Faculty of Languages of the University of Turin at the moment of his premature death in 1997. Much of the equipment which now constitutes the Laboratory has been bought by him between the 70's and the 90's. For this and other reasons, the laboratory is dedicated to his memory.

Arturo Genre graduated at the University of Turin with a thesis in Romance Philology entitled Fonologia della parlata di Prali (Torino), was lector in Lyon (France) and director of the Friulan materials of the Atlante Linguistico Italiano (ALI). Consequently, he taught Linguistics and Orthoepy at the Scuola di Specializzazione per Tecnici di Audio-fonologia at the Institute of Audiology of the Facolty of Medicine until he became Associate Professor of Experimental Phonetics at the Faculty of Literatures.

Apart from his many contributions to Italian Dialectology and his studies concerning the Valdese and Occitan language and culture, he is remembered for promoting the ALI, for creating the Atlante Toponomastico del Piemonte Montano (ATPM) and for being co-author of the first manual of acoustic phonetics published in Italy (Nozioni di fonetica acustica, Turin: Omega, 1979, in collaboration with F. Ferrero, L.J. Boë, M. Contini).
